Jack Daniel’s Sues Popcorn Sutton

So this story hits really close to home – literally about 30 miles away out in Lynchburg, TN. First let me explain why the local news report not only caught my eye, but after seeing what the suit is about really makes me think Mr. Sutton’s boys need to rethink their bottling strategy.  I can’t drink alcohol anymore. Don’t get me figured wrong though, I had many, many nights in my personal history that included being completely obliterated (many nights with Jack Daniels, though my whiskey of choice was always Crown Royal). My medical health includes a diet that completely abstains the intake of any alcohol period, it makes me violently ill and I’ve found I enjoy not getting sick as much as I can. However introduce hubby – Jack Daniel’s is his drink of choice. He never would choose a different type if given an option, and is a Jack Daniel’s fan down to his soul. So much so, that when he turned 30, I contacted the Jack Daniel’s Distillery and asked if they would allow him (full bio on his love for Jack included in the letter) to put their ‘brand’ on his calf in the form of a tattoo. We got a letter back from a Mr. Roger Breashears in the corporate office at Lynchburg. It was a wonderful letter that thanked hubby for being a loyal fan, of course invited us back (as of that point, I think hubby’s number of visits was 13 since moving to Tennessee almost 8 years ago) and had my hubby named a squire! A squire is a very honored club to be a part of (Wikipedia actually mentions a squire! We still to this day, love visiting the Distillery and we take the tour every single time. 🙂 My sister, who is a tattoo artist and hubby worked together to make the perfect tattoo and placement and on his birthday he got the letter, the squire invitation and I knocked that year out of the park! The Tenneessean covers the basics of the suit, but let me illustrate a point. For over a century Jack Daniels has adopted a unique a recognizable use of bottles, labels and other marketing so that it is known by simple look. The bottles have changed over the lengthy history of the spirit but for the better part of 100+ years, Jack Daniel’s has been in it’s uniquely and known bottle. You can find out about every bit of the Jack Daniel’s legacy by visiting their website. The long and the short of it is, in my humble opinion is that the boys over at Popcorn Sutton‘s outfit are trying to trick or possibly win over those who buy their brand by the look of the bottle. I think that if they have a good product (this is an untasted theory on my behalf) then they should do just as Mr. Jack did all those years ago and seek out packaging that fits the image of their beloved Popcorn. The story from their side of the camp is that Ol’ Popcorn said his stuff was just too good to be in a mason jar – just a little tip to these unimaginative folks, white lightning or ‘shine has always been in mason jars or gallon jugs. I think the classier of the two is the mason jar; it is backwoods and for the common man in it’s history. Try starting there – better yet – revamp the mason jar to a newer better version if you have to change it. Leave Mr. Jack’s bottle and labeling for him – that’s not a ridiculous request. Be your own unique thing. I tried finding a website for Popcorn Sutton’s Moonshine and found that there is not an actual website. What do you...

Amber Alerts Down? Another Victim Of The Shutdown…Half Truths And What The Real Problem Is

My eye was immediately diverted when a Twitter blurb from Razor [@hale_razor] about the government shutdown and it’s latest ‘victim’ in the form of cuts claims the Amber Alert Website was down saying “if it saves one child ‘was just talk” and thousands just like it. And for those who missed it, visitors were indeed greeted by a white page with bolded typeface and an official DOJ seal, indicating that yes – it was closed due to the shutdown. Love The DOJ. The website that was untouched was Mrs. Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ Website – which is her cause to end obesity is the US children. Ok, this is a useful site, but the comparison of obesity versus missing kids was a little excessive. However, fact that it takes 21 people to run her site compared to previous First Ladies’ typical staff of 1 for the same job,I believe could be a good comparison and could probably survive a little ‘slimming’ and continue to function. At first, I was enraged when I saw the tweet thinking that this was really a travesty of justice! At first they took our history and beauty in the forms of monuments, museums and national parks; but now they threaten the safety of our kids too! Imagine my surprise at going to the amber alert site & seeing it back up and thinking a little bit more when I saw that this was not the place that I see active Amber Alerts, but instead a somewhat ‘administrative’ type site that does provide you some important information, but definitely is not detrimental to the actual alerts released for missing children. In fact, the Amber Alert system itself never quit functioning. The actual active Amber Alerts are found at The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, and they addressed the issue above. Admittedly, I did not know that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was where to find the current Amber Alert information and this seemed plausible until I researched. This is such a great example of how someone finds a true fact and exploits the already confused and agitated emotions of the public as a whole to try to set the not entirely informed on a rampage. Social media and otherwise. After looking into all of this, I am finding voices out there that are only about the hype they can build on an incomplete truth. I say incomplete, because the ‘facts’ are in some way based on a shred of truth, but the urgency and play on emotional response is becoming typical and commonplace. I think it’s time for someone who is neutral to step in and explain what is happening – without the name calling and stone walling and outlandish representations of what is happening. Better yet, maybe it should be our elected representatives explaining, and being held accountable. I think it’s well time for Americans to get out there, ask questions, and write your state officials. It really is time for all of the pettiness that has become politics today to change and we need to tell our representatives what to do. Prove to them that the constituents still care and that they are accountable for what they do. Stop sensationalizing bits and pieces of truth shards, get informed about what is going on and how that affects you – federal employee or not – and let your voice be heard! This is still a Democratic society and no matter what you think of the President and the job he is doing – he’s gone in 2016. Unless enough people stand up and find just cause for impeachment, then he stays until then. I say it’s time to start figuring out what these politicians really do when the crunch comes (not what they say to get elected), and if it is not in the best interest of the people, get them out of there. And when 2016 come around, let’s hope an informed American public unites for what this country can be – not what the hashtag trending troublemakers are doing, the ‘oh, that’s cool because it’s different than any other time in history’ approach, or the ‘popular’ shoe in candidates of your ‘party’. It doesn’t really matter if we are Republican, Democrat, Tea Party, or any other group we classify ourselves if the overall promise, nationality, and ultimate success of America (from the top all the way down to the single person) matter? Can we not unite as a fiscally minded, compassionate and unified whole? Or are we going to continue down this path of me, me, me instead of ‘We The People’? RESEARCH The Daily Mail NBC LOS...

Just Curious About Your Browsing

Just curious as I look at the stats included on the traffic coming across The Asylum; are you experiencing a good page load, theme load etc when you are visiting? At one point I had received a comment that indicated the page was not really ‘optimized’ for viewing on Internet Explorer? Is there still an issue with this following my optimizing and fixing of the site? Would appreciate any feedback you can provide 🙂

US Government Standstill 2013

I titled this post with a year as the current one is virtually over.  I personally don’t see time for another shutdown before 2014 & honestly, I have zero faith that the government will fix this one before the year runs out. Worse still, from how it looks here, I see a month year date format coming for any future posts on government furloughs. The government has frivolously wasted so much of our nation’s capital and assets, meanwhile they just keep taking and taking from the people. I could go on all day about how they’ve sent money to places that we don’t have to send. How we pay for all those plushy vacations and pensions and paychecks for our elected officials’ padded pockets and many other obvious transgressions of mismanagement of finances documented out there under bills and line items –  but that is not what really just burns a fire in the pit of my soul. For them to close down all National Parks is ridiculous. I get that there are many people who just throw trash around willy nilly, and that things like toilet paper in restrooms and trash needing dumping is a must; but I don’t think there wouldn’t be someone who wouldn’t be willing carry a roll up from home; or day trippers finding it too taxing to carry out a bag of trash from a can – I know I wouldn’t. One small victory  today, I did find a pretty great story though on this Day 1 of our shut down. A victory that came in the form of 90 WWII Veterans who ended up peacefully ‘persuading’ some congressmen to move the barricades to the National WWII monument in Washington D.C. Read the entire story here and hear the words of an 89 year old Vet with quite the personality from Mississippi. Another kind of interesting read comes from CNN.com with at least a partial list of departments shut down, what services are affected; as well as those unaffected or only partially affected by the shut down. Visit the Interactive Database. I think that Americans can and will be responsible for the things that we hold near and dear. For the government to shut down access to National Parks and museums (although sad, this one I can somewhat comprehend due to costs of security and other overhead in a secure type building) just seems to be a message to further crush the American spirit and patriotism by killing all access to the beauty and history in our nation. It feels like the government is pushing us right into a socialist or communist regime. I see the very foundations upon which this country was built being broken down like an individual dismantling a home brick by brick. The worst part of all, is that we are not really protesting – we whine and complain via blogs and Facebook or anonymous comments posted throughout the web and as we sit and watch our country fall into teeny tiny pieces without a shred of recognition of what it is to be American. Yet, we keep electing these self righteous idiots, who care no more for you and I than they do a filled trash can, into places of power and control – and they keep blowing not only every bit of income they get from the people, but have the power to just keep on jumping up the limit on maxed out credit cards. If an individual in America somehow found a way to play the system in this way, I can pretty much guess the fate of them. It’s time to stand up and hold your government accountable and make them responsible for the choices they’ve made. Get them out of there. Let’s refuse to accept these perverts, self serving, overpaid, indiscriminate, and soulless infidels OUT of our governing bodies – not even accept them on a platform – cut them out before they can even get there. I am sick of being in a country that sits and lets the people that speak for the whole in public forums talking from their nether regions and ‘representing’ America here and worldwide. Shame on us America, we can do better than...

Samuel L. Jackson Tells Obama To Speak More Presidential…

I am beginning this post with one of those ‘A-ha’ head bonking moments that really show me how at certain times, I just listen to the news, take a sound byte and run with it. Today’s particular headline that caught my eye is the comment from Samuel L. Jackson to President Obama about how he should “speak Presidentially” when addressing his constituents.  I had to check this out and see exactly what he said and took a little time to think about it. There were two reasons this caught my attention: 1) I enjoy Samuel L. Jackson as an entertainer and have found him to be fairly eloquent when he decides to say something (though usually peppered with his favorite expletives), and 2) I have had nearly the same thought when I watched coverage of various speeches and talks Obama has given in different areas and on different occasions.  First I had to take a look at the interview (it is a Q&A session with Playboy Magazine) and I found so much of what he said overall to be rather interesting. From differences in opinion with Spike Lee, to his Tennessee raising and yes, there was a section where Jackson pretty much told President Obama that it is time to put on his ‘big boy pants’ and start acting like a president! Harsh words coming from an African American powerhouse in Hollywood? I agree with him and I can remember thinking to myself how incredibly fake Obama comes across in his speeches. I have added a few links below, I expect, as I did, you will have your own opinions. I found the one video that struck me as one of the most forced accents in his Asheville, NC and how it struck me then that he just puts on the face he thinks the situation expects to see. I am also adding the links to the news articles, the original Playboy interview, a couple of links concerning Samuel L. Jackson’s biographical history and a couple of President Obama’s different personas. How many do you count? Links to my post research:  Playboy Interview E-Online Townhall.Com Fox News Samuel L. Jackson’s Wikipedia Samuel L. Jackson Biography.com Obama’s speech in Ashville, NC about economy  Obama’s speech Memorial Day  Obama MLK Speech  Sound off and tell me what you think….Was Samuel L. Jackson way out of line? Do you see the President ‘donning a regional mask’ when he goes into the public arenas to talk? Do you even care? Are there bigger issues at...

On The Soapbox Again ;)

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a news hound. I love hearing about what is going on around the world. I see a lot of wonderful stories that make my heart swell with pride and love for my fellow humans. I have seen stories of homeless men returning found money, children saving others from a fire coming back from buying GTAV, and strangers paying entire layaway bills for struggling families. And then I see a lot of things that shouldn’t get as much airplay (I believe), such as constantly talking about and popularizing the evil deeds people do. Ariel Castro – the Ohio Demon who kidnapped 3 young women; the Boston bombers and their family – who blew up a national foot race, and whose mother fled the US because she was a thief running from prosecution…Today I would like to add my own 2 cents on a couple of stories: First, this hullabaloo over the death of Michael Jackson. I am a child of the 80’s and I remember being so in love with him as a kid. He was a superstar. He was a musical genius. And he was a drug addict. The family and music exec’s keep fighting over who did what etc., honestly at the end of the day, no matter who administered drugs – I can just about guarantee he asked for them. There was an obvious decline in how he looked and plenty of evidence of mental instabilities (anyone remember him dangling ‘Blanket” over the balcony, or multiple accusations of inappropriate behavior with little boys?) The long and short of it is, it doesn’t matter who wins – he’s still dead, he was still living the life of an addict and it has obviously affected his family negatively. Another sad detail of this drama is that his daughter, Paris, watched him stay drugged up most of her life – and her response to the stress was to take pills to escape. I think that everyone would be better off if they would all just bury Michael and be done with it. His musical legacy is strongly intact – his personal legacy is in a wrecking ball state and it’s time to let him R.I.P. It is also time for the fighters to start thinking about the future – and not stay lost in the past.  Next is this silly little ploy by Burger King – “Look,we’ve made healthy ‘Satis-fries’! We are still encouraging you to eat these junk foods that are terrible for you, under the guise that you are getting out healthier by a reduction of 20% of the fat in our fries!” Ok, one – did you get rid of the carbs and ridiculous amount of salt on your fries? Have you brought back salads, or is your menu still full of heart stopping, grease filled burgers (anyone had a double stacker?) and other junk food menu items? It cracks me up that they took a side item instead of the main meal portion to make healthier. BK – give me a break! When I think junk food, french fries come first to mind, followed by pizza, hamburgers and hot dogs. If you really want to be healthy, ditch the burgers and fries and give us some healthier options, not a false sense of health with 20% fat removed from a french fry. And a final item that I think is going to be a GREAT book! Stephen King released ‘Doctor Sleep’ where we get to see what happened to Danny, the son from ‘The Shining’ and see where his life went following the terror he lived through as a child at the hotel. I personally can’t wait to read this...
